To help clients reach effective resolutions, mediators must provide a positive, productive environment for all participants.  The cultural context of participants in meidation can determine how they understand, interpret, and analyze their circumstances and the alternatives available to them.  Cultural characteristics can be differentiated among several dimensions and aspects; the ability to perceive and to cope with them is one of the basic elements of cross-cultural competence.

These include but are not limited to how one understands: the individual within the community, the roles of men and women, differences in power, time, space, non-verbal communication, and values orientation. 

Pat Gadsden will help participants in this 

workshop explore their own cultural context and how it relates specifically to the African American cultural experience in our area. COST:
